SEO

I actually enjoy building websites, especially when they present challenges and problems to solve along the way. Once the building is done though, other less enjoyable tasks need doing… making sure the site is as secure as it can be from hackers, other security issues, backup processes, data rollback processes, etc. Another such tedious task is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). I don’t know whether it’s true or not that even Google’s engineers don’t fully understand their search algorithms (I suspect collectively that they more or less do), but I am dubious of the thousands of small companies who claim to have all the answers. SEO is an ever-changing dark art, and I certainly don’t pretend to know how to go about achieving high rankings. I don’t even particularly want high rankings as such, but it would be nice if people could at least find my stuff when searching for something that’s relevant. There are certain basic things that should be done by everyone though (provision of an xml sitemap to main search providers, meta titles and descriptions, etc), and that’s what I’ve been doing this evening (yawn).
