It seems I spoke too soon when I said in my last post that I was now in a position to carry on making progress with the development of this site again. At the same time that I’m working on this site, I’m also building a new website for a registered charity. The two sites both sit on the same server. I still don’t know what happened last night but somewhere the connectivity was being severely throttled on both of those sites. So much so in fact, that pages were taking anywhere up to 6 minutes to load, and just as frequently, to time out. This made development on either site virtually impossible. Quite where the issue lay, I’ll probably never know. It wasn’t my own connection, and the server admin insists it wasn’t a server issue too, so that leaves anywhere between here and Silicon Valley, which is where the sites are now hosted (a big move compared to the datacentre 20 miles away from me which previously hosted this site). An over-enthusiastic attempt from that same server admin to locate the cause of the bottleneck resulted in the loss of lots of work, and whilst the connectivity issue seems to be resolved, for now at least, there is a lot of work to (re)do to get back on track again. As the deadline for the charity’s website approaches, unless I can quickly recover from the events of the last 24 hours, this site will have to drop down the priority list a bit. Fingers crossed that the connectivity stays good from now on!
